What an interesting story of origin. I didn’t know that American colonies were purchased for $300 by random immigrants seeking to bring their kinfolk over. This guy sounded like quite the con-artist and philanderer. You also taught me a new word today. I had never heard the term “cutpurse” before.
and my original reply: The various colonies, in Spanish Texas anyway, had different levels of purchase depending on what you planned on doing with the land. Ranchers got a lot more land than farmers. It wasn't uncommon for folks to claim the were going to ranch, just to get a bigger parcel. Also for folks to 'marry' to double their parcel allotment. An interesting time period in history.
