I motorcycled with the tattooed for over a decade. Always wanted to get one. If someone had pushed me an inch, I'd have done it, but in truth, all those years, I never found that perfect image. Maybe I'm that generation, but I've never cottoned to the tattooed "mass," a whole arm or neck, or torso looking like the Sistine chapel.

Yes that is for sure - it's more or less permanent, so you want to be sure you choose wisely. Reminds me of the time my husband and his coworkers were at a work event and all decided to get a tattoo as a sort of bonding experience. I'm sure a few adult beverages were involved. So he came back from his trip with a tattoo of an Asian symbol above one ankle. Supposed to be some kind of brotherhood/inspiring/memento type message. Years later, he discovered it didn't mean what he thought it meant. Still laughing about that one.

My brother and I were having community-style breakfast at a hotel a few years ago, the kind where you're seated with a bunch of other fellow travelers. The guy next to us was a truck driver and apparently starved for human interaction. A bit of an oversharer to say the least, but that's another story. Anyway - by the time we finished our meals, we had also seen a couple of his tattoos of former girlfriends' names (yes, there was more than one) that he had to have covered up with a different tat when relationships didn't exactly work out.

I've seen some of those very elaborate sleeves or whatever they are called when they're not on the arms. Lovely, but I can't imagine how long that must take to apply. Not to mention how much they cost!

I liked your dad’s joke! I just did Persian henna hand tattoos with my daughter when she came to visit. Great fun and washes off in three weeks. I liked wearing her artwork so much, I was considering getting my first real tattoo. I applaud your open mindedness and I also enjoy the research part of writing.

Ooh I forgot about those! A friend and I had some done years ago when we were chaperoning her daughter's high school field trip to the local Ren fair. I liked mine so much, I took a photo of it in case I wanted to make it permanent some day. Still have the photo!
